Hiring your first employee: what should you arrange?

Hiring your first employee is a big step. It means growth, but it also brings new obligations.

With good preparation, payroll administration becomes manageable and you avoid unpleasant surprises afterwards.

Employment contract

Everything starts with a clear contract. It should define:

  • function and tasks
  • working hours
  • salary and benefits
  • notice and termination rules

Standard templates exist, but in many cases it is worth having them checked by a specialist.

Registration and payroll office

In Belgium, most employers work with a recognised payroll office. It calculates wages, social contributions and declarations for you.

Before the first working day, your company and the employee must be registered correctly.

Employer costs

The gross salary is only part of the total cost. In addition, there are employer contributions to social security and other legal charges.

A payroll simulation helps you see the full picture.

Subsidies and reductions

For the first employee, Belgium offers significant reductions on employer contributions. In some cases, regional subsidies may also apply.

It pays to check this in advance, so you do not miss any support.

Health and safety

Employers must join an external prevention service and ensure safe working conditions.

My advice

Hiring staff can free up your time and help your business grow more sustainably.

During a consultation, we review:

  • whether hiring or outsourcing makes more sense
  • what the real total cost will be
  • which reductions you qualify for
  • how to set up payroll smoothly from day one
